Many schools find that Christian visitors can play a useful part in their assembly program, and the Lighthouse Project aims to provide support to schools in their assembly and RE programs.
The Project is supported by Crawley Baptist Church amongst a number of churches in Crawley and its leader, David Jordan, is a Christian working for the Vine Christian Fellowship, a church which meets in Crawley, which has links with many other churches in the town.
The Project’s Team presents Christian assemblies in schools in Crawley. They also run lunchtime clubs in some schools. The team is also available to teach RE and citizenship classes.
In assemblies, the Team aims at an engaging and sensitive presentation of the Christian message. These are the Crawley schools where The Lighthouse Project is currently presenting regular assemblies:
Bewbush Primary (KS1 and 2) The Brook Infant (KS1) Gossops Green Primary (KS1 and 2) Ifield Community College (KS3-4) Maidenbower Junior (KS2) Pound Hill Infant (KS1) The Oaks Primary (KS1 and 2) Three Bridges Junior (KS2) West Green Primary (KS1 and 2) |
Broadfield East Junior (KS2) Desmond Anderson Primary (KS1) The Mill Primary, Ifield (KS1 and 2) Maidenbower Infant (KS1) Northgate Primary (KS1 and 2) Southgate Primary (KS1 and 2) Three Bridges Infant (KS1) Waterfield Primary (KS1 and 2) |
The Team is happy to fit in with a theme for the week, if appropriate. It checks proposed material with the school prior to undertaking the assembly or class, and asks schools to complete feedback questionnaires after each assembly/class.
Here is a selection of the comments that have been made about assemblies the team has presented:
The Lighthouse Project runs four lunchtime clubs in Junior Schools in Crawley. These clubs are called the Lighthouse Club. At the Lighthouse Club, children explore stories from the Bible, using games, drama, storytelling, craft activities, etc. The children also sing songs and are able to pray if they want to. Children attend Lighthouse Club only with parental consent.
In addition to regularly taking assemblies in Ifield Community College, the team is involved in running a lunchtime drop-in club for all pupils, and an after-school club where young people are able to explore issues from a Christian perspective. The team is also involved in teaching part of the Citizenship curriculum in the College.
